Vintage African Mud Cloth - Textile - Black and White Pattern

This large mud cloth blanket is handmade in Mali using locally grown cotton.
 
The cotton is woven into strips of thick canvas, stitched together, and then roll painted with traditional Malian designs.  Each piece is individually hand spun, hand woven, and hand painted.
 
The mudcloth has a long tradition of being used by West African warriors and hunters to camouflage themselves.  Traditional African mudcloth sheets are handwoven and made one at a time. African artisans hand-dye symbols into these fabrics in order to tell stories of their villages and African proverbs.
 
Small holes, discoloration, unfinished edges are all part of the charm of the mudcloth.
 
Can be used to make pillows, curtains, or just throw it over a chair... would also make a beautiful wall hanging.
 
Measures approximately 46"W x 68"L.
 
For best care, hand wash in cool water and air dry.
